1 Samuel 3, 8, 9, 16, 17, Ecclesiastes 1—2

The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”  –1 Samuel 16:7

This week we read a sampling of chapters from 1 Samuel.  In this book, we see a major turning point in the history of Israel.  God’s people ask for a king (like all the other nations) and the Lord grants their request.  The Lord doesn’t choose the person they expect, however, because the Lord looks at the heart and not at outward appearances.  Through King David, God establishes the covenant promising that a king descending from David will always reign.  (Look ahead to Jesus, the King who reigns forever. As we see in Matthew 1:6, Christ Jesus is born from David’s family line.) –Nate Metler
