WCC Team Visits 2nd Mile Missions in the Dominican Republic

For the past 14 years, Sonlight has partnered with 2^nd Mile Missions to provide academic scholarships and cover tuition for four students who attend one of the organization’s schools in the Dominican Republic. Sonlight sponsors four students each year, one student for each program area (Early Childhood, PreK/K, Grades 1 to 3 and C456). In addition, members of the WCC congregation also sponsor 2^nd Mile Missions children directly.

From April 9 to 14, a WCC team of 12 comprised of 2^nd Mile Missions and WCC staff, WCC volunteers and a 2^nd Mile Missions co-founder travelled to the Dominican Republic to spend time getting to know the WCC-sponsored children and conducting a Vacation Bible School-style program for all the children. The team spent time serving at the organization’s ministries in Bavaro, Monte Verde and Punta Cana.

“Worshipping and teaching the salvation message to the kids at a small church was a highlight for me,” said WCC’s Children’s Ministries Pastor Brooke Price. “The church is in Monte Verde, which is a little Haitian refugee village near the schools. We got to truly experience the culture and interact with the children, whose joy and generous hearts were so evident, despite the fact they have so little.

“This trip was really special, though, because we got to meet Sonlight’s sponsored students as well as our personally sponsored students,” Brooke continued. “We got to see where the students go to school and the communities where they live. This makes our relationship with 2^nd Mile Missions event more exceptional because we better understand their lives and can now relate and communicate with our students and their families in a more tangible and heartfelt way.”
