Followers of Christ never know how God can use them for His kingdom. At first glance, they may feel their life journey is disconnected from others because of the struggles they have faced, but in reality, those struggles are what prepares them to practice empathy and walk alongside others who are hurting. Such was the case for Stephen Minister Amber Haines.

“If it wasn’t for my faith in God throughout my life, I don’t know where I would be,” said Amber. “I grew up going to church every Sunday with my family, which led me to be baptized at the age of 13. But it wasn’t until I had to lean on God when my own understanding was not enough that my faith became real.”

When Amber was first approached about becoming a Stephen Minister, she was a bit hesitant, unsure if she was a good fit. But after learning more about the ministry, she saw it as an opportunity to serve.

Stephen Ministry complements pastoral care by pairing trained individuals one-on-one with those looking for encouragement during a difficult period in their life. The goal is to be the embodiment of Jesus Christ as a listener, trusting Him as the ultimate healer.

While the focus of the ministry is to care for others in their time of difficulty, the Stephen Minister also grows.

“So many times, Stephen Ministry has reminded me that my job is not to fix everything for others but to walk alongside them to provide a pillar of support and hope,” said Amber. “Stephen Ministry has also taught me to listen to others’ circumstances without passing judgement, which can sometimes be a challenge. Spiritually, ministering in this way has given me the confidence to be bolder in sharing my faith and has also shown me that the Holy Spirit can use me as a voice to help others.”

“If someone believes they have a heart for caring for those who are hurting and are considering becoming a Stephen Minister, my advice would be to take a leap of faith and trust that God will work in miraculous ways,” Amber concluded. “God proves time and time again that He will provide healing to those in need.”
