WCC Students and Volunteers Perform Acts of Service
Tuesday, April 9, 2024
WCC volunteers and youth from Student Ministries recently performed a variety of school outreach and community service projects, just days before the beginning of spring break.
On March 24, 89 WCC students, 14 small group and nine community partner leaders participated in Student Ministries Service Day, a day designed for students to give back in the community. Students cleaned and sorted items at Combined Community Services, cleaned desks and vacuumed rooms at Eisenhower Elementary, played with children at Fellowship Missions to give parents a break, assisted at the Habitat for Humanity build sites, cleaned and prepared disaster relief kits at World Compassion Network and helped prepare for Good Friday and Easter services at WCC.
“Service Day is something we have done for a couple of years now to reinforce to students the importance of following Christ’s example and serving,” said Ryan Langeland, Pastor of Children and Student Ministries. “We want to instill in students the value of serving and how by doing so, they are being obedient to Christ. Christ gave Himself in the ultimate act of service, so the world needs to see His people be kind and selfless and serve.”
Children are especially antsy the week before spring break, so March 25 was a perfect day for WCC volunteers to provide breakfast and some notes of encouragement for the staff at Eisenhower Elementary School. The notes let staff members know they are cared about, appreciated and being prayed for. A group of eighth-grade girls from WCC Student Ministries baked blueberry scones in the WCC kitchen late into the evening March 24 to serve at the Monday-morning breakfast.
“It was truly a delightfully tiresome but impactful couple of days,” said Greg Demopoulos, Pastor of Outreach and Engagement. “A huge thank you to WCC Student Ministries pastors Aaron Christenberry and Ryan Langeland for scheduling Student Ministries Serve Day, as well as our small group leaders, local partners and partner ambassadors who oversaw the projects. Thank you for shining your light in the community.
“Let us always remember that our actions matter, and people notice what we do,” Greg concluded. “I am so grateful to serve alongside each of you. May we continue to represent Christ well in gratitude for what He has done for us!”
